I initially made the decision to join the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics program at the University of Chicago due to its distinguished expertise in the field of structural biology. Although I had prior experience in X-ray crystallography during my undergraduate studies, I was interested in broadening my skillset to include cryo-EM. At the time, cryo-EM was rapidly advancing, and UChicago was making exciting advancements to their cryo-EM facility. Upon my enrollment at the university, I discovered an intellectually stimulating environment that fostered academic growth, alongside a culture of inclusivity and collaboration. The accessibility to engage in spontaneous discussions and exchange ideas with fellow researchers from diverse laboratories within close proximity has proven invaluable to the progression of my own research endeavors. Moreover, I have been fortunate to experience a strong sense of community among fellow graduate students, and the university has demonstrated its recognition of our value by allocating resources towards activities specifically designed to enhance our graduate education, including workshops, journal clubs, and seminars.
